What do I do?

I help people to communicate in different languages or to express themselves correctly in Spanish. I try to provide my clients with comprehensive solutions and anticipate their needs. I use my creativity and knowledge to manage and solve problems.

Since 2011, I have been translating texts on a variety of subjects, but I spend much of my time in the field of development cooperation, international agencies and NGOs, especially translating on gender equality, human rights, sexual and reproductive health, migration, education, the environment and youth leadership. I also dedicate time to translate and proofread texts in the arts, social sciences, marketing, health care, among other subjects. In addition, I am a certified English translator, which means that I work with legal, commercial or personal documents that need to be translated and legalized. Another portion of my time, I act as an interpreter at conferences, meetings, visits, weddings, other civil registry procedures. Often, I manage translation and interpretation projects and organize linguistic events where several professionals are needed.

I would love to go back to teaching translation, but, for the moment, I only research topics in my profession that interest me.

About Me

I'm Mai (or Maiten, but never Maite) and, although I sometimes say it jokingly, in addition to what I do, I feel that I'm a citizen of the world.

I've visited many places and lived in many others. Through travel, as I gained more kilometers, it became more difficult for me to identify solely with my place of birth: Chaco, Argentina. I grew up in a family that was very committed to its environment, curious and adventurous. My professional life was very much marked by my childhood and adolescence, between visits that ranged from the dense forests of the Impenetrable National Park in Chaco to France.

More About Me

While accompanying my parents—a United Nations consultant and a journalist mother and writer—I learned languages and discovered worlds beyond geographical locations. Growing up in a multicultural and diverse context and mindful of many injustices and inequalities, I was inspired to get involved and work in areas where I could somehow help to improve the lives of others.

When I was 18 years old and enrolled at university, I was sure that I loved to communicate, but I did not want to follow in my mother's footsteps. Translating was something that came naturally to me, so I decided to pursue a degree in Sworn Translation at the National University of Córdoba, Argentina. When I started studying, I didn't have a clear idea of what I could do beyond working in the private sector or becoming an employee of the United Nations - something that seemed utterly unattainable to me. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I discovered that I would be able to unite my passion and interests beyond the traditional areas in which I could work. Consequently, my professional career was not linear, but stemmed from my concerns and experiences.

What do I like most about what I do?

The human element and the possibility of helping others. Many people think that my work is comparable to that of a machine. However, it involves being available to assist other people who have problems or needs, some of which they have not recognized. Behind many assignments are stories of people whose lives are improved by my intervention. Few vocations allow for the distribution of ideas, the generation of access to civil rights or the achievement of changes in legislation.

That's why, for me, it's the best job in the world.

No, I don't teach the verb 'to be', but I can help you communicate in another language or write better in Spanish.

Translation

I work with general texts in French and creative and specialized texts in English and Spanish.

As you can see from my CV, I have trained in several areas, including technology applied to translation. However, much of my training is linked to my practical experience, which allows me to understand in depth some of the sectors in which I work. I believe that this understanding and my responsiveness set me apart from the rest. I translate texts in the field of development cooperation and international agencies on gender equality, human rights, sexual and reproductive health, migration, education, environment, youth leadership and health care. For these projects I am accustomed to using different variants of Spanish and making the necessary adjustments to include diverse audiences.

MY WORKS

For personal interest, I have taken courses in art history, visual arts, philosophy, journalism, digital storytelling and consumer macro-trends, among others. By establishing myself in these fields, I started to provide services to artists, museums, compilers or researchers in social sciences and marketing departments, to name a few clients. In general, these translations into English are often reviewed by colleagues in England or the United States who work closely with me to ensure that the final work sounds natural and idiomatic. I am registered with the Colegio de Traductores Públicos de CABA, and this allows me to do certified, or legalized, translations. In my day-to-day work, I mainly receive requests for birth certificates, analytical certificates, diplomas, criminal records and contracts. I also advise my clients on processes related to universities, visas, marriages and the registration of persons, among other procedures.

Interpretation

I work with four approaches: simultaneous, consecutive, link and remote.

¿Qué quiere decir esto? Que puedo trabajar en una cabina en una conferencia o un evento multitudinario. También puedo participar de una ronda de prensa, la presentación de un informe o una auditoría y tomar notas mientras una persona habla y después decir en otro idioma lo que ella acaba de decir. Otras veces acompaño a una persona que no habla español en una visita o un evento y me encargo de interpretar todo lo que le dicen y dice. Con la llegada del coronavirus, adapté mi oficina/casa para prestar servicios de forma remota.

In addition to interpreting, I take care of managing all the documentation and following up on the steps required for international marriage, between two spouses of different nationalities (Argentine and foreign) or for couples in transit. For the latter case, I have an interdisciplinary team that includes from a notary public to a photographer to offer you everything you need to make the ceremony more than just a formality.

Proofreading

If you have written a text with different colleagues and need to unify writing criteria, if you have doubts about how to present the content or you have an extensive job and the screen fatigue no longer allows you to identify errors, no problem. I am the pair of eyes that can help you.

I've been working for various companies, organizations and individuals for six years almost exclusively as a proofreader. Some of my daily tasks include detecting spelling and linguistic errors, changing the phrasing to make it clear and accurate, suggesting terms or adjusting formatting.
